Rules on the pitch

Fouls & cards. Careless trips, pushes, holding and late tackles can produce free kicks. Direct-free-kick offences in the defending penalty area produce penalties. Some fouls allow advantage; reckless incidents may bring a yellow, a second yellow sends that player off, and serious incidents can bring a direct red.

Restarts. The opponent gets a throw-in when you touch the ball out over the sideline. A defender touching it behind produces a corner; an attacker touching it behind produces a goal kick. Goals are followed by an opposing kick-off.

Set pieces. Free-kick and corner opponents stand 9.15 m clear; throw-in opponents stand 2 m clear. Penalties are staged at the 11 m mark. Offside offences produce indirect free kicks, which are delivered to another player rather than scored directly.

Match structure. Two halves, added time, ends changed after the interval, and extra time followed by penalties for level knockout games. Sent-off players cannot return; a side reduced below seven abandons the match.

Selected rules are simulated using the IFAB Laws of the Game 2026/27. Decisions are generated by the simulator; this is not a complete officiating system. The improved 3D characters remain stylised rather than scanned real-life people.

  1. Release The first kick-off

The original A-League Men match simulator: club selection, kick-off time, tactics, match clock, statistics, commentary log and adjustable goal frequency. Two halves, added time and knockout extra time brought structure to each match.

  2. Update 1 More chances, more goals

Adjusted the shot-chance calculation so higher goal settings create more attacking opportunities. Scores remain simulated rather than guaranteed.

  3. Update 2 The game enters 3D

Introduced a 3D pitch and home stadiums, moving player models, club-colour jerseys and shirt numbers. Official squad portraits and selectable player cards helped put faces to the teams.

  10. Update 9 Routes, rivals and referees

Added match officials and separated home fans in the west from away fans in the east. Stairways and entrance routes kept spectators off the pitch; scoreboards, goal flags, food interactions and nearby speech made the concourse busier.

  11. Update 10 One game, two competitions

Introduced the A-League Women mode alongside the men’s competition, with women’s squads, portraits and venue choices. The game gained its title: A-League Matchday: From Pitch to Stands.

  14. Update 13 Tunnel to touchline CURRENT

Separate Home and Away team walk-ons, a visible players’ tunnel and dressing rooms, and route-based half-time, return and full-time journeys with a following camera. Fouls now lead to playable free kicks and penalties; corners, throw-ins, goal kicks, advantage, offside and individual dismissals add structure. A stitched 32-panel ball, fine woven nets and additional character detail improve the match scene in both competitions.

The original release comes before the numbered updates. Update 11 added the history; Update 12 added playable older versions, and Update 13 adds tunnel journeys and set-piece play. Open any milestone to read its changes; the timeline is available in both competition modes. Select Play this version to launch the saved game from that milestone. Earlier versions include the features and limitations they had at the time. Switching versions starts a fresh match.
